I found this new method of seed starting on YouTube and I’m really excited to try it. I received a free Jiffy greenhouse seed pod starter which is what I have been using so far. However, I am not having luck with my pepper seeds. They are not staying warm enough to germinate. And since I am losing my patience I want to give this new method a try. I was blown away by the results this gentleman got from his method.
The only materials needed are:
Seed Starting Heating Pad
Thermometer
Ziplock bags (sandwich size)
Paper towels (select a size would be easiest)
Spray bottle of water
Towels
Seeds
He laid a paper towel on the counter, sprayed one half with water, sprinkled some seeds on the wet portion of the paper towel, folded the paper towel in half, sprayed some more water on the paper towel, then inserted it into a labeled Ziploc bag. He then sprayed a little more water into the Ziploc and sealed the Ziploc with a tiny little air hole, so he didn’t seal the Ziploc the entire way.
He plugged in the seed starting heating pad and then laid 1 to 2 folded towels on top, then laid the seed packs on top of those with the thermometer reader placed with the seed packs, then he added more towels for insulation. He also mentioned that the seed starting heating pad can get overly warm which is why he used towels and the thermometer. He kept the temperature between 75-85 degrees.
It only took him six days to get germination out of pepper seeds. My pepper seeds have been in the seed starter pods for almost 2 weeks and I still have yet to get a germination. That is how crazy these results are. Plus I love the fact that you can actually see the root system. It is very fascinating for a new grower to see the root system in action while it sprouts and grows.
I will post an update to see how well this method works. I added the link to the YouTube video below.
